I wrote a Sims Challenge inspired by Stardew Valley!

The Simsdew Valley Challenge focuses on finishing "Bundles", upgrading your farm, raising animals and starting a family.

You can check out all the rules here

Rules include French, Spanish and Russian Translations.

You have spent your life until now as an office drone, wasting your days in a dimly lit office, when one day you get a letter. You have inherited your grandfather’s farm. You decide that the office life is not for you and you head to the valley. Armed with what little money you have and some hand me down tools you found in the house, you take on the job of restoring the farm and giving it the life it once had.  

While reading through the rules, if there is something you don’t like or an element of gameplay you don’t enjoy, then don’t do it. This challenge is supposed to be fun and if something is going to make it not fun, then change it. However please do not repost my challenge rules with your changed rules and claim it as your own.

Only 500 simoleons to start (testing cheats on/money 500)

Game Settings:

Must play on Long lifespan or no aging as this is not a legacy challenge.

Default holidays are optional, but I would recommend removing Winterfest and Harvest Fest

Sim must go to bed by 2 am and wake up at 6am

Can only cook with items grown/produced on farm, or purchased from the store

Participation in the Finchwick Fair is optional

Home:

Get the house I made from the gallery (ID: DizzyMissLizzy #SDVchallenge) or build your own. Must not be worth more than 20k. Basic amenities only.

House Upgrades must be purchased and can be found on my gallery. You may remodel the house as you like after purchasing upgrades. 

The house may be a Small, Tiny or Micro home and utilize the bonuses until you upgrade.

You may have as many farm animals as you want, but you must build a shelter or structure for each type before you can purchase the animal. (the default home for cows, llamas and chickens don’t count as shelter. Must at least be fenced in)

Livestock must be purchased as a baby if you have the option, except for horses.

You may breed your animals.

Season 3 Rewatch Drabbles: 3x6 Ariel

Summary:  A series of 100-500 word drabbles to accompany my    rewatch of season 3 of Once Upon a Time.  There will be a drabble–either a deleted scene, a “fix it” fic or a character musing for each episode of the season.  Focus will be on Emma, Henry, the Charmings and Killian–with an emphasis on Captain Swan’s epic love story.

Emma stood on the precipice.  Did she stay, or did she move forward?

The last few minutes had been…a lot.  She’d been on Neverland all of six days–she assumed.  It was hard to keep track of the time in a place where the sun never rose or set, but they’d at least slept five times since arriving–and in that time, if she’d learned anything, it was that Pan was a sadistic little shit, but Echo Cave was on an entirely new level.

Reveal your closest held secrets or let Neal die.  That had been the choice.  Her parents and Hook had chosen to save Neal.

And while she questioned whether their secrets were truly their darkest, they had been doozies.   It would take her some time to process the fact that her mom wanted another kid so that she had a chance to be a parent or that her dad had almost died from dreamshade poisoning and can never leave the island.

And then there was Hook.  Emma didn’t want to admit it, even to herself, but when his secret was, in essence, an admission that he’d fallen in love with her, her heart had given a quick swoop and then begun to pound.  There was no denying the attraction between them–it would be laughable to even try after that kiss (gods could that man kiss!)--but love, well she wasn’t nearly ready to go there.

Their collective secrets had succeeded in building a bridge to Neal’s cave, and now it was up to Emma.  Could she do this?  Could she admit to Neal the secret that had immediately popped to mind the moment Hook had told them the rules of this stupid place?  Shame burned inside of her for even thinking it, but she hadn’t been happy when she’d heard that Neal was still alive.  

No, it was worse than that.  She’d hoped it was a lie; hoped it was all just another of Pan’s games.  When she thought about Neal, there were so many feelings that welled up–love, anger, pain, even fear.  Oh not fear that he’d hurt her, at least physically, but fear that just being near him would force her to relive some of the worst moments of her life.

There was a part of her that still loved him; probably always would.  When they were together and happy, he’d made her feel like she mattered, something no one else in her life to that point had ever done, and for that, he’d always hold a special place in her heart.

But she knew that love was not enough.  What he’d done had scarred her so badly, she could never go back to him.

Her mom seemed to think she should; had spent the last day, in fact, acting as though she believed Neal was Emma’s True Love or something, and that the only thing holding Emma back was her fear that she couldn’t get him back.  Every conversation with her had been like a twist of the knife to Emma.  She’d just wanted to forget Neal, forget everything, and as much as she hated herself for feeling this way, it had felt like his death had given her the chance to do just that.

Now…well, now she had to make the same choice her parents and Hook had made–the choice to make herself vulnerable and face her deepest secret.  A part of her wanted to turn tail and run out of the cave as fast as her legs would take her, Neal be damned, but she knew she couldn’t do that.  She had to face him; had to tell him the truth; had to hope somehow, someway the truth would set not only him but her free.

She took a step forward, and then hesitated once more.  She looked back seeking–well, she didn’t know exactly what she was seeking.  She caught Hook’s gaze, and he gave her a small, almost imperceptible nod.  That nod seemed to say more than an entire soliloquy could have. Go on Swan; you can do this. I’m behind you all the way.

She felt a renewed strength, a renewed determination, and with that she turned back around.  As hard as it would be, she knew what she had to do.

the way you left me || At nineteen, James vanishes, and Lily breaks.

I wrote this in a fevered rush, and I think it's the one I'm most proud of overall. Not entirely sure why, which doesn't lend itself to this sort of post, does it? It's sad and sweet and painful and all the things I like writing most. Angst with a happy, hopeful ending is my sweet spot.

2. Uninvited || With NEWTs looming, friends gather at the Potters' cottage in Wales to study and let off steam during the Easter holidays of their seventh year.

What's not to enjoy about pining, a Welsh beach and a 'there was only one bed' scenario? It includes this sentence, which I feel nicely encapsulates the gang:

They ate their fill; Mary tried to teach them a strange Muggle game called cricket, which James had a natural affinity for (“ever the fucking sportsman,” Marlene jeered from her position on the opposing team); Sirius tried to lead a team into the shallows, forgetting that the waters around the British Isles were frigid at the best of times; Remus built a bonfire in a bid to stop said team from developing frostbite.

I mean, what more can I say?

3. Forget-Me-Not (cw: sa). ||. At eighteen, Lily Evans fell - and fell hard - for James Potter, a classmate she had never given much thought to before. He seemed as into her as she was into him, so why is it, when she starts a new job almost a decade and a lot of water under that particular bridge later, that her new boss - James Potter himself - doesn't seem to remember her at all? A Don’t You Forget About Me by Mhairi Mcfarlane AU fic.

I wasn't going to include this one, but I guess I changed my mind? I'm proud that I a) finished this fic at all, and b) hopefully managed a very fine balance in dealing with an extremely sensitive subject. It was all a very personal writing experience and I guess I'm glad it all came out okay in the end.

4. A Lesson in Communication || There's a rule at his school that teachers are strictly not allowed to date the parents of pupils. James has never minded this rule before...

This largely started because it so amused me to think of James wrangling children at sports day. This is one of those stories that was supposed to be a quick thing, and then morphed into a nearly-12k monster whereby the misunderstandings piled up on top of each other like delicious pancakes. Yes, if anyone asked a straightforward question this fic would be about 500 words. Yes, my favourite bit is still Remus' reaction when he realises James' mistake.

5. The Price We Pay || As the summer before their sixth year comes to an end, Sirius, Remus, Lily and James consider how things may be different on their return to Hogwarts. When Sirius finally breaks free from his toxic home, it should be a fresh start - but unfortunately, it's the start of a spiral that will threaten the foundations of friendship, and change their lives irrevocably.

Last but not least! That blurb could do with updating, really, given that now – 27 chapters in – we're into seventh year and rather a lot has happened, haha. Still, when I started it, I didn't think I'd write more than maybe five or six chapters, and then it sort of grew its own little legs and scurried away from me. You know, how writing does? It's my original baby fic and I love it so but I also go through phases where I worry it's all utter bollocks, so it's very much a rollercoaster of a relationship. There is something both wonderful and challenging in writing a canon multi-chap, especially in this fandom where there are so many amazing canon multi-chaps. We battle on.

What a strange, therapy-esque post this ended up being 😅

Project title: "Leise-Park".

Project description: We invite online artists to participate in our disturbing project entitled "Leise-Park". In this project, we want to explore the issue of silence as an opposition to the anxiety we may feel in the context of the development of various digital trends and Internet technologies. The pervasive availability of mobile devices for spreading content and ideas through all types of Internet-based media, creates a sense of loss of self-control resulting from the pervasive information chaos. Our beloved smartphones are beginning to turn us into a kind of zombie addicted to absorbing information content from the Internet. What consequences does this have for us as well as for further social evolution? Do the emotions that accompany us at this moment allow us to analyze this phenomenon. Can we face this new reality? Can artists help us understand what currently surrounds and shapes us. Can we find distance from the world around us and calm down, or will we become technological zombies? That's why in the “Leise-Park” project we want to ask this question to artists who are willing to take part in our project with their work. Like all our projects this one too is based on the idea of DIY and DIWO. We often think of the park as a place with sculptures, traditionally made of stone, here those sculptures are to be works displayed on the smartphones of the show's viewers. Access to the links via a poster with a QR code pasted on a cardboard presenter cut to resemble a plant plaque. Presenters with the artists' works will be placed at various locations in Leise-Park. Projektbeschreibung: Wir laden Online-Künstler ein, sich an unserem beunruhigenden Projekt mit dem Titel "Leise-Park" zu beteiligen. In diesem Projekt wollen wir die Frage der Stille als Gegenpol zu der Angst erforschen, die wir im Zusammenhang mit der Entwicklung verschiedener digitaler Trends und Internettechnologien empfinden können. Die allgegenwärtige Verfügbarkeit mobiler Geräte zur Verbreitung von Inhalten und Ideen über alle Arten von internetbasierten Medien führt zu einem Gefühl des Verlusts der Selbstkontrolle, das aus dem allgegenwärtigen Informationschaos resultiert. Unsere geliebten Smartphones verwandeln uns allmählich in eine Art Zombie, der süchtig nach der Aufnahme von Informationsinhalten aus dem Internet ist. Welche Folgen hat das für uns und für die weitere gesellschaftliche Entwicklung? Erlauben uns die Emotionen, die uns in diesem Moment begleiten, dieses Phänomen zu analysieren? Können wir uns dieser neuen Realität stellen? Können Künstler uns helfen zu verstehen, was uns derzeit umgibt und prägt? Können wir Abstand von der Welt um uns herum gewinnen und zur Ruhe kommen, oder werden wir zu technologischen Zombies? Deshalb wollen wir im Projekt „Leise-Park“ diese Frage an Künstlerinnen und Künstler stellen, die bereit sind, sich mit ihrer Arbeit an unserem Projekt zu beteiligen. Wie alle unsere Projekte basiert auch dieses auf der Idee von DIY und DIWO. so anyway, I had a A-Z Platinum Challenge video recommended to me on YouTube and now I’m going through my steam library considering an attempt at A-Z 100%ing 27 games (one for the #/symbol entry, and a-z) just for funsies (and to finally play and/or finish some of my massive game library*) and was curious if I should bother liveblogging or somehow documenting that process if I do it. I was thinking about doing polls for the letters I have multiple options for (ie most of them cause I have a LOT of unplayed games). Also, in the process of going through my library I’m coming across some unFINISHED games where I still have more achievements to get (gone though #-d so far and there’s at least one or two per, though obviously this won’t be the case for every letter in the alphabet), so trying to decide if it would end up a ‘finish what you started’ challenge or start to finish blind-to-completion goal.

so what’s the verdict? Interested? Not interested? I haven’t been really noting games as I play them, but I am a bit of an achievement hunter (not hardcore, just for indie games mostly) in my free time. Literally 100%ed like four games last week (tho lbh that was an outlier week lmao). Also I have a Problem with buying games any time I see a good deal, so I need to play these games.

*I keep a spreadsheet of the majority of my games, and even though only like 450-500 of them are on steam, that spreadsheet is over 1600 games long.

Hey first of all, congrats!! That's really big, and hard to do, and you should be proud of yourself!

I find that casual large-group settings are easier to start socializing in, personally, just because having more folks there takes the pressure off any one person to really engage or try to carry the conversation. You can hang out and listen, chime in as you feel comfortable, and then sit back again until you feel ready to engage next.

That isn't true for everyone; some people find groups overwhelming and hard to break into, and that's probably something you'll have to figure out and gauge for yourself.

But if groups work for you: I really recommend starting with some community-type spaces, and art might be a good shared interest to bond with people over! You could try art classes in real life (through a local community college, community center, or maybe one-off classes offered by a local art store), and maybe hang around for a bit before or after class to see if anyone else strikes up a conversation.

You might also try Discord servers; especially smaller ones (under 500 members, like, max) and ideally centered around art, or media you like and can connect with others over. Maybe hop into a voice channel and stream yourself drawing, and invite others to join you to draw, or play video games while you draw! It may take a while, but with a few tries at different times of day, you'll likely find a couple of people who want to hop in with you.

I also really recommend looking into ways you can connect with folks who have been thrift something similar. I'm giving you this advice as someone who hasn't been through what you've been through, and even more than good advice, people who have will probably have a lot more insight into struggles you haven't encountered yet, resources that can help, and can probably relate to, connect with, and understand things that others can't. It's still valuable and important to connect with people outside of that, and no one person or group is going to understand every part of you, or meet every social need you have. But cult survivor support groups, online communities, discord servers, etc. are a good place to start!

A little bit of Background

A prologue of sorts. The War of the Gods ended about 500 years ago. According to the bards, this was a war between the Gods of Sedonia and all of demon kind. The Gods had the mortal help of six Great Heroes that modern bards love telling stories about: Avir, the Thief of Time. Ember Stone-Speaker. Rikia the Way Finder/aka Rikia the Hearth Seeker. Sabar, the Keeper of Secrets. Carfax the Clear-Sighted. In all of these stories they owe deference to some great unnamed king. Imagine the Arthurian legends telling stories about all the knights of the round table but never once mention Arthur, just kind of reference a king that these knights owe fealty to.

Now imagine you found a book - something that belonged in a museum, it's so old - that gives that king a name. Tells stories about him! Even alludes to how he finally died and what happened to the most sacred artifact in your country's history. This is where Terran, a master of the Scribal Guild and our current protagonist, finds themself. Cracking open that mystery of History would make them the most famous scholar of all fucking time!

However, that path they must take to get there leads to adventuring and adventuring sometimes leads to...heroism.

In Sedonia we have a culture of Heroes and Bards. Yes there are the Great Heroes of legend, but most of the time when you hear a bard sing or tell a story, it's about a more recent hero. "Hero" is almost like its own social class and just about anybody can become one. They have a semi-symbiotic relationship with the bards of Sedonia: A hero does a thing and the bards turn it into a tavern tale which increases the hero's renown as well as the bard's reputation. Therefore it is in the bard's best interest to make the hero look as good as possible, which can lead to some glossing over of facts, changing of facts or even downright hyperbole! For the Heroes it is in their best interest to treat the bards well and never get on their bad side, because when a bard gets pissed at you they might write a 27 verse song about how you romanced a donkey and after the act was completed the donkey flung itself off a cliff because you were so bad at it. In Sedonia, a bard's word carries the weight of a herald so whatever they say happened will be taken as truth by the populace. This causes a lot of consternation amongst scholars like Terran who would REALLY like a little more critical thinking to be done thank you very much. Truth, people! Plus, it gives space for unsavory characters to become very well respected and beloved by the populace, no matter what they are ACTUALLY like. So some members of the party have feelings about THAT as well.

Sedonia is surrounded on all sides by tall mountain ranges. We are completely land locked. Normally we have a robust trade with our nearest neighbors, Ravinia and Neban, but recently that trade seems to have dried up quite a bit and at the moment nobody knows why...

Any place names or character names that you recognize from other fiction or from real life will end up getting changed; it's just easier to keep up with the game if the names are the same between the game notes and the novel rough draft. I think that's about it, that's all the information we the players had going into the game and we seem to be figuring it out okay. but feel free to ask questions as the story progresses. It might get answered in the text or it might be something I don't realize needs clarification.

The game is a home brew based on the Harnmaster system rather than actual DND, so monsters, races, abilities, etc. will not be a one-for-one translation

“Stop groping my pulse. If you’re hungry, just eat.”

Grimmjow’s sleepy, extremely grumpy voice tears through the dreamy half-doze Ichigo was starting to sink into. The words themselves take a moment to coalesce into something meaningful.

When they do, he regrets everything.

“I’m not hungry,” he says into Grimmjow’s hair. “And I am not…”

Grimmjow shifts, and some of the shorter strands of his hair, slightly damp from his nightly shower and mussed to hell from Ichigo’s complete inability to resist a wet, half-naked Grimmjow, slides boldly into his nose.

He pulls back, sneezing violently, and almost misses what Grimmjow says.

“…just molesting my throat for fun? Pervert.”

“What the—I’m innocently cuddling you, not molesting your throat, and will you stop phrasing it like that, you degenerate asshole?” For good measure, Ichigo pulls back the hand that was spread loosely over the base of Grimmjow’s throat. And sure, his thumb was on the pulse, stroking idly, but he wasn’t groping anything.

“Why? It’s accurate.” Grimmjow, like the pissy cat he is, refuses to concede. “You never touch my dick like that.”

“For fuck’s sake, Grimmjow, if I went for your dick the way I do for your throat, you’d have bigger problems.”

“Promises,” the crazy bastard purrs.

My #1 post of 2022

Being an extremely picky reader, I have a lot of sympathy for people who can't find the kind of fic they want to read, who don't resonate with many popular fanon, who have tastes that just aren't often addressed in most fic. The smaller the fandom, the worse off these woes, usually. What I don't give two shuddering shits about are the folks who make this the authors' problem.

Fanfic detractors love to say it's not real writing, but even putting aside the 101 ways that's total bullshit, the sheer act of writing takes time. At my fastest, I could write maximum 1200 words an hour; these days, it's closer to 500. Yet, you have so many writers churning out fic after fic, ranging from bite-sized bits to epic-length monstrosities. That's hours and hours of our lives. I set aside 2–3 hours a day for writing, and you can bet those add up fast.

So here you have these people creating scores of content for the hell of it, putting it up for free, and expecting damn near nothing in return. There are outliers, of course, but the general sentiment I've seen is that we don't want money, and we don't demand comments, though we appreciate the everloving shit out of them. At the core of it, writing fic is a labour of love, and fandom is a gift economy.

You know what's not a gift? Being a little shit in the comment/ask boxes of your local fandom writers.

It's fine, absolutely a-okay, spectacularly acceptable to not like or even viscerally hate any given character, trope, ship, or even specific fic. But listen, that's a you problem—and it doesn't have to be problem at all if you just click that pretty X and exit the story posthaste. The author won't even know you'd been there, and you're free to go wash out the taste of whatever fuckery made you nope out. If you're inclined toward writing yourself, you can even give the tried-and-true art of writing out of spite a go.

But, for the love of god, don't hop into the comment box and list all the ways in which the author could've made the story the one you wanted.

It's not your story. It's also clearly not for you. The writer wrote the story they wanted the way they wanted it. Leave it the fuck alone.

Some writers may ask for concrit; feel free to give it, provided you've nailed the constructive part of constructive criticism.

But their writing has typos and grammar errors: Shit happens, and we're not robots. Ignore it, or if you can't stand it, stop reading.

But it'd have been better if it was another ship/character/direction: That's your opinion, which will remain valid for only as long as it stays solely in your head. Again, stop reading. Exit quietly.

But the content is problematic: My brother in Christ, it was meant to be. We're not all pearl-clutching puritans. Stop reading things that upset you, especially if they're tagged!

Harassing authors won't get you the content you want. Nor, for that matter, will politely pestering them make them see the holy light of whatever crusade you're on. Most you'll manage is break the confidence of a fledgling writer or drive someone vulnerable out of fandom. And if that's your endgame, you're the kind of trash a handful of words from voxofthevoid.tungle.com can't change, so fuck you anyway.

Creativity begets more creativity. In every fandom I've written for, I started writing because, after a point, reading wasn't enough. I have specific tastes that don't always align with broader fandom tastes—for instance, I like out-and-proud sadists and writing my favs as tops/doms, whereas the predominant trends seem to favor the opposite. I also like very specific kinds of fuckery with my fluff, which are often hard to find. All that's fine. I have MS Word and the will to use it.

Granted, writing fic deliberately tailored to my tastes isn't the same as reading fic that's coincidentally tailored to my tastes, but that's fine too. I can be immeasurably grateful to the wonderful folks whose writing does strike a chord in me while also endeavouring to one day make someone say, "Damn, voxofthevoid, this is exactly the story I needed." That's what I want to give to fandom.

Others are free to think, "Yikes, voxofthevoid, you're fucked in the head," and be on their merry way; just don't make it my problem.

And if you, personally, don't have the time or inclination to be the porn fic you want to see in the world, there are other ways to encourage the kind of content you want to see. Participate in fandom exchanges. Seek out writers that take prompts or requests. Send positive encouragement (not rude demands) to the writers whose work you enjoy.

Don't throw a tantrum in the comment/ask box. It helps no one. It pisses off a lot of people. Nobody benefits.
